How to Strengthen Your Password Security

Strengthen your passwords, secure your accounts, and stay a step ahead of hackers.

Passwords protect nearly every part of your digital life — from your bank account to your streaming services. But the truth is, most people still rely on weak or predictable passwords without realizing it. Improving your password security doesn’t have to be complicated — it just takes smarter habits and a few modern tools.

What Not to Do

Avoid passwords that are:

  • Common words or simple phrases – like single dictionary words or obvious sequences.
  • Predictable sequences – such as numbers in order or repeated digits.
  • Personal information – including your name, a family member’s name, your pet’s name, birthdays, addresses, or favorite sports teams.
  • Pop culture references – like your favorite TV show, movie, or musician.
  • Seasonal or event-based terms – including the current year, holidays, or the season.

Instead of using your high school mascot, a favorite St. Louis Cardinals player, or your hometown name (like Jefferson City), create a password that is unpredictable and unique.

How to Create a Strong Password

Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible. This could include a code sent to your phone or a verification prompt through an authenticator app. MFA adds a second layer of protection, keeping your accounts secure even if a password is compromised.

Review and Refresh Regularly

Check your accounts and update passwords as needed. A password manager can monitor password strength and flag weak or outdated passwords, making password protection easier and more consistent.

Strong passwords, smart habits, and an extra layer of protection go a long way. Taking a few minutes now to update and strengthen your passwords can help keep your information — and your peace of mind — safe
